NATCHITOCHES, La. -- The Golden Eagle women's tennis team remained undefeated following a 4-1 win over the Northwestern State Lady Demons on Sunday, Feb. 20. Southern Miss picked up its first road win of the 2022 season in Natchitoches, La.
Southern Miss (6-0, 1-0 C-USA) opened its morning by winning the doubles point, as two pairs of Golden Eagles picked up wins to clinch a 1-0 lead. Sarah Medik and Monique Burton opened the match on court one with a 6-4 win and the pair of Ebru Zeynep Yazgan and Alyssa Richter secured the doubles point with a 6-3 performance on court two.
Yazgan took care of business once again on court one in singles competition with set scores of 6-2 and 6-3. Burton fell in her singles contest in straight sets, but two set wins from Medik and Richter clinched the 4-1 win for the Golden Eagles.
"We beat a very good team today," head coach Steve Schram said. " They pushed us to our limits, but we were able to pull through with some big wins."
Suhana Das and Clara Tardivel led their singles matches before play was halted after Southern Miss claimed the win. The Golden Eagles are now 1-0 on the year in road contests after starting the 2022 season with five matches either at home or at neutral sites.
"This was definitely a great win for our program," Schram said. "I couldn't be more proud of these young ladies. Their heart and desire is second to none."
With the wins, Schram improves to 37-9 with Southern Miss and a career mark of 114-44 as a collegiate head coach.
