HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's tennis team heads to Natchitoches, La. for a pair of matches on Saturday, Feb. 19 and Sunday, Feb. 20. The Golden Eagles take on their first Conference USA opponent of the season in a neutral site matchup with UTSA before taking on host team, Northwestern State on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles last faced off with Sam Houston last Sunday in their first neutral site matchup of the season. The Black & Gold bounced back in doubles competition following a tough outing the previous match. Sarah Medik and Monique Burton, along with the pair of Alyssa Richter and Ebru Zeynep Yazgan won their doubles matches to clinch the point for Southern Miss.
The Golden Eagles defeated the Bearkats by a score of 4-2, propelled to the win by strong singles performances from Yazgan, Burton and Suhana Das. Southern Miss improved to 4-0 for the first time since 2020.
Southern Miss first takes on UTSA, a familiar C-USA foe. The Golden Eagles won the last contest against the Roadrunners in 2020, but have dropped four of the last five meetings dating back to 2015.
UTSA enters Saturday's match with a 1-5 record, pending a contest between the Roadrunners and Northwestern State on Friday at 1 p.m. UTSA's record includes a pair of losses to C-USA opponents, as the Roadrunners were dispatched by North Texas and Middle Tennessee last week.
The Northwestern State Lady Demons ride a three-game win streak into this weekend's contests with recent wins over Stephen F. Austin, Texas State and Loyola. The Lady Demons previously hosted a fall invitational, which Southern Miss took part in.
Southern Miss looks to ride a strong 2021 Conference USA season into Saturday's contest. Head coach Steve Schram led the Golden Eagles to a 3-1 C-USA record, notching the most conference wins in program history.
The Southern Miss women's tennis team takes on the UTSA Roadrunners on Saturday, Feb. 19 before squaring off with Northwestern State on Sunday, Feb. 20. First serve on both days is slated for 11 a.m.
