HATTIESBURG, Miss. --Â The historic start continued for the Southern Miss men's basketball Sunday afternoon following its 103-52 win over Mobile (3-3, 0-2 SSAC) at Reed Green Coliseum. The Golden Eagles (7-0, 0-0 SBC) are 7-0 for the fourth time in program history and for the first time since the 2006-07 season.Â
Four days after picking up MVP honors at the Cancun Challenge, Felipe Haase picked up right where he left off. The Chilean went for 17 points and 12 rebounds to pick up his first double-double of the season and the 12th of his career. Haase scored eight points in the first seven minutes of the game, while all five starting Golden Eagles recorded a point and rebound in the first five minutes of the game.Â
Â
A Mo Arnold dunk five minutes into the game put the lead into double digits for the remainder of the game and the lead then ballooned to 22 when Austin Crowley threw down a dunk to cap an 8-0 run. Ezra McKenna and DaMariee Jones tried to will life back into the Rams, but Haase halted that with 4:14 to go in the half. DeAndre Pinckney and Crowley pushed the lead back to 24 before a string of Mobile buckets made it 53-28 with 31 seconds left.Â
With time winding down in the first half, Sage McKenna banked a jumper at the buzzer to make it a 23-point game at the break. Southern Miss forced 11 turnovers over the first 20 minutes and held the Rams to 29.2 percent shooting from the floor. On the other side, Southern Miss was blazing hot from the floor with a 59.4 percent shooting clip. Crowley hit two of the Golden Eagles' six triples in the half.Â
Southern Miss' stout defense continued into the second half as it held the Rams to just 18 total points over the final 20 minutes of the game. Crowley scored the first eight points of the half for the Golden Eagles as the lead hit 30 with 16:25 on the clock -- a Crowley and-one minutes later pushed it to 43. Victor Hart blew the rood off Reed Green Coliseum following a deep three-pointer to make it a 47-point game with 8:48 still to play.Â
Hart then put the exclamation point on the afternoon when he took a pass under the hoop and slammed it home to make it 93-43 in favor of the Golden Eagles. Head coach Jay Ladner dipped into the Nasty Bench over the final stretch of the game only to see them score 10 points in under three minutes.Â
Trey Alfonso took a Jeff Armstrong pass in the corner and drove to the hoop while making the basket while getting the foul call. He hit the free throw to finish the three-point play and then GianFranco Grafals joined the scoring party on the next trip down the court. Armstrong scored the final four points to get Southern Miss over the 100-point mark for the first time since last season.Â
Â
The 51-point win was the largest margin of victory under Ladner. Southern Miss set season bests in shooting percentage (.594), three-pointers (9), assists (22) and total points (103).Â
