HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss men's basketball finalized its 2026-27 non-conference schedule on Tuesday. The slate features seven home games, and another on the Mississippi coast.
"Our non-conference schedule is not designed for an easy road and isn't littered with cupcakes," said head coach Jay Ladner. "It's full of great challenges, it's attractive, and it's the "Southern Miss Way."
"It's designed for one thing and one thing only, and that's to get our team ready for league play and to get us prepared to play in the conference tournament. Our goal is the NCAA Tournament; it's that simple."
The Golden Eagles will preview their roster with two exhibition games. The first is at home against LSU New Orleans (Oct. 21) and the second is at Houston Christian (Oct. 28) the following week. The season officially opens against Tougaloo on Monday, Nov. 2, at Reed Green Coliseum -- Southern Miss' home opener last season was a 93-57 win over Tougaloo.
Southern Miss will then travel to Iowa State (Nov. 6) to face a Cyclones team that went to the Sweet 16 last season. The Golden Eagles return home to face Jackson State on Nov. 13 and then head to former Sun Belt member Texas State (Nov. 17).
Southern Miss then starts a three-game stretch away from Hattiesburg that starts at Grambling (Nov. 19). The Golden Eagles then head to Pensacola for the Pensacola Invitational Nov. 21-22. Southern Miss will play Nicholls and Valparaiso at the Pensacola Bay Center. The Golden Eagles won the event last season, with wins over North Florida and UT Martin.
The Golden Eagles finally return to The Greenhouse on Nov. 29 to host Grambling and then will host Tulane on Dec. 2. Southern Miss will then make the long trip to Oregon State (Dec. 5) and will also stop at McNeese (Dec. 10) on the same road swing.
The final two non-conference games include a home game against Tuskegee on Dec. 14, and then a neutral game against Ole Miss (Dec. 22) at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. A Sun Belt game against James Madison is sandwiched between those two on Dec. 19 in Hattiesburg.
Sun Belt play will ramp up with a two-game stretch at Georgia State (Dec. 31) and Georgia Southern (Jan. 2). League play will run through Feb. 26 and will conclude against South Alabama at Reed Green Coliseum. The Sun Belt Tournament is slated for March 2-8 at the Pensacola Bay Center.
