10/8/2022 10:30:00 AM | Women's Soccer
HATTIESBURG, Miss.—The Southern Miss women's soccer team (1-7-2, 1-3-1 Sun Belt) host Troy (3-6-2, 1-3-1 Sun Belt) at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex Sunday at 1 p.m.
Last Time on the pitch
The Black & Gold dropped their first series match up against Coastal Carolina 4-1 Thursday, Oct.6, in Conway, S.C.
After a scoreless first half, Coastal defender Julia Ziegenfuss netted the ball with an assist by Rocio Fernandez off a corner kick. Eighteen minutes later, the Chanticleers continued to put up goals with a 4-0 lead while the Golden Eagles pushed to get a foothold in the contest.
Midfielder Ilana Izquierdo upset the shutout with a late goal in the 86th minute, making the score 4-1 at the final.
Series history
Southern Miss leads the series 2-0-1, with matches dating back to 1997.
Last Meeting
The last time these two teams met on the pitch was in Hattiesburg on Sept. 3, 2008, at the Hattiesburg High School's football stadium due to the Southern Miss field being unplayable after Hurricane Gustav. The Black & Gold took control of the game early as forward Sarah McFadden hit a cross pass to midfielder Mallory Barnes who then fired the ball into the net in the 12th minute of action. The Trojans found the equalizer in the 41st, but neither team could get ahead, forcing the draw 1-1 after two overtime periods.
The Opponent
Robert Lane, the Trojans' first-year head coach, formerly served as Georgia's assistant women's soccer coach. He spent six seasons as the head coach for Montevallo and Belmont Abbey.
This past season, Lane assisted Georgia in compiling an 11-5-3 record, which gave them an RPI ranking of No. 55 in the NCAA, their highest ranking since 2004. Additionally, after failing to qualify each of the previous four seasons, the Bulldogs secured places in the SEC Tournament in all three of Lane's seasons.
Troy currently holds a 3-6-2 record overall and a 1-3-1 in Sun Belt play after their 1-0 loss against Old Dominion at the Troy Soccer Complex on Oct. 6.
