MONROE, La. --Â The Southern Miss (12-6, 4-2 Sun Belt) volleyball team upended ULM (6-14, 0-6 Sun Belt) in four sets (25-20, 25-22, 22-25, 25-22) on Friday afternoon to win its eighth consecutive match against the Warhawks. Mia Wesley moved inched closer to 1,000 career kills as the sophomore slammed a match-high 19 at Fant-Ewing Coliseum in Monroe, La. to reach 982.Â
The Golden Eagles used an 11-1 run in the first set to notch an eight-point lead and be the first team to 20 points. Madison Bowles and Wesley combined for five kills in that stretch, while Wesley also snuck in three service aces. ULM mounted a comeback attempt that got it within four, but a Nyanuer Bidit kill sealed the 25-20 win. The Golden Eagles hit .225 in the first set and benefited from a .188 hitting percentage from the Warhawks.Â
Senior Kenzie Smith set up Mia Wesley with one of her match-high 47 assists to open the second set and helped catapult Southern Miss to an early five-point lead. From there, the Golden Eagles hit an 8-1 run that featured three kills from Izzy Kronenberg. The Ankeny, Iowa native would end up finishing with six kills and a .235 hitting percentage. ULM would make it a three-point match three separate times in the second set with Southern Miss needing just a point to secure the set. However, right on cue, Wesley delivered a big kill to give the Black and Gold a two-set advantage.Â
ULM was able to take the third set after holding Southern Miss to a .060 hitting percentage with nine attacking errors in the frame. The Golden Eagles held a lead early in the set but coughed it up and ULM never eased its grip on it, winning 25-22.Â
Southern Miss fell behind 6-2 in the fourth set, but a string of ULM errors kept the Golden Eagles within striking distance for much of the early portion of the set. It wasn't until a Lindsey Legg service ace at 19-18 that Southern Miss took the lead for good and then Wesley ripped of three kills to push the lead to four. At 22-18, ULM rallied to make it 24-24, but Wesley delivered two big kills -- paired with a ULM error -- to bring home Southern Miss' eighth-straight win over ULM.Â
Liana Guillemaud contributed nine kills to the offensive attack, while Bowles, Bidit and Kronenberg all had six apiece. Bowles finished with an impressive .417 hitting percentage and added an assist. Libero Megan Harris with a match-high 20 digs and got defensive help from Reagan Leinen, who had nine digs and two blocks. Leinen, an Amarrilo, Texas native making her second start this season, finished with three kills on the offensive side.Â
The Golden Eagles will next head to San Marcos, Texas to take on Texas State Oct. 14 and 15. Friday's match in Texas is scheduled for 6 p.m.
