Volleyball Travels to Texas State for Key Conference Matches

HATTIESBURG, Miss. --Â The Southern Miss (12-6, 4-2 Sun Belt) volleyball team continues its four-game road swing as it travels to Texas State (13-6, 5-1 Sun Belt) for a pair of Sun Belt Conference matches against the West Division leaders. Friday's match from the University Events Center in San Marcos, Texas is slated for 6 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.Â

Southern Miss Nuggets
Southern Miss heads to Texas State after picking up back-to-back wins at ULM last weekend to push its SBC record to 4-2. The Golden Eagles used a 3-0 sweep on Thursday to power past ULM before besting the Warhawks in four sets on Friday afternoon. Sophomore outside Mia Wesley continued to dominate as she tallied 34 kills and six service aces on the weekend. Wesley leads the Sun Belt Conference in attacks per set (13.57), kills per set (4.96), points (389.5), points per set (5.73), service aces (36), total attacks (923) and total kills (337).Â
Senior setter Kenzie Smith is also filling up the SBC rankings as the Manhattan, Kans. native leads the conference in total assists (742) and is second in assists per set (10.91). Defensively, sophomore libero Megan Harris is second in the conference in digs per set (4.51) and total digs (307). Wesley needs just 18 kills to reach 1,000 for her career, while Smith surpassed the 2,000 assists mark against Troy on Sept. 30.
Scouting the Bobcats
Texas State owns an SBC West leading 5-1 record after picking up two wins against Louisiana last weekend. The Bobcats are led by Jannett Fitzgerald who has a team-high 222 kills and averages 3.52 kills per set. Setter Emily DeWalt has 718 kills as she has rewritten the Texas State record book over her five seasons in San Marcos. She is second among active NCAA Division I student-athletes in matches played (149), career assists (5,528) and career sets played (521). She has been named the Sun Belt Setter of the Year four times and has been tabbed the Preseason Setter of the Year. Defensively, Alyssa Ortega leads Texas State with 185 digs, while Jillian Slaughter has posted 50.0 blocks this season.Â
