SAN MARCOS, Texas --Â The Southern Miss volleyball team fell in straight sets (21-25, 18-25, 25-23) on Friday night to Texas State (14-6, 6-1 Sun Belt) in San Marcos, Texas. The Golden Eagles (12-7, 4-3 Sun Belt) were paced by Mia Wesley's 12Â kills.Â
A long rally to open the match was just a precursor to what would unfold between the two Sun Belt West Division powers. The Bobcats and Golden Eagles traded blows through the first 17 points as neither team had extended its lead past two until a Wesley attack error gave Texas State a three-point lead. The Bobcats then found their groove and extended their lead to six points before Madison Bowles sliced into the home team's momentum.Â
The Southern Miss rally peaked when a Lauren Teske service error started a 5-1 run for the Golden Eagles that got them within two after a Cailin Demps block. At 23-21, Texas State benefited from a kill and a Golden Eagle attack error to take the first set. The second set ran the same narrative as the opening one with both teams trading points in the early half. Cara Atkinson ended a Texas State run to make it 10-8 in favor of the home team, but the Bobcats answered with a 6-2 run to pull ahead by five. Wesley ended the run with a monstrous kill that resulted in nine-straight points that went back-and-forth between both teams.Â
For the second consecutive set, Southern Miss found life trailing 22-17, but Texas State scored three of the next four points to win the set and take a 2-0 lead. Despite dropping the set, Southern Miss hit a match-high .276 with 11 kills and three errors. The Golden Eagles jumped to a 4-1 lead to open the final set, but Texas State answered right back to tie it. It was the second of 14 ties in the set, which followed only eight ties across the first two sets combined.Â
Neither team took control until the Bobcats hit a 5-0 run to pull ahead, 24-20. Wesley smacked back-to-back-to-back kills to fight off set point and make it 24-23, but Texas State got a kill from Jillian Slaughter to seal the Friday night win. The Golden Eagles hit .205 as a team for the match, while the Bobcats hit .296. Wesley converted at a .196 clip that included three errors. The Orem, Utah native is six kills from reaching 1,000 for her career.Â
Demps finished with eight kills, while Atkinson added another five. Reagan Leinen went for five kills and an impressive .455 hitting percentage. Southern Miss got 29 assists from senior setter Kenzie Smith and one kill on eight attempts. Megan Harris finished with 14 of the 43 Golden Eagle digs. Aliah Giroux added another eight, while Smith finished with six.Â
Southern Miss and Texas State will meet on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. The match from Strahan Arena will be streamed on ESPN+.
