Southern Miss Soccer Defeated in Road Match Against Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C.—After a scoreless first half, Coastal Carolina (2-7-3, 1-3-1 Sun Belt) pulled away and defeated Southern Miss (1-7-2, 1-3-1 Sun Belt) 4-1 in Thursday night's match at the Coastal Carolina University Soccer Stadium.
The Golden Eagles had opportunities to jump after taking three shot attempts within the first 10 minutes of the period to test the Coastal backline.
The Chanticleers led the period in shots 7-5, but the two teams exited the field unable to separate.
Midfielder Ilana Izquierdo was awarded a penalty kick at the 49th minute of action but it was saved by the Coastal keeper.
To break the scoreless tie at the 56th minute Coastal defender Julia Ziegenfuss, who recorded a trick at tonight's match found the back of the net with an assist by Rocio Fernandez off a corner kick.
Forward Megan Brouse picked up a goal at the 74th minute of action with an assist from midfielder Maggie Mace 2-0.
With a two goal lead the Chanticleers pulled ahead with nine minutes left in the match when Ziegenfuss volleyed the ball past Alex Helbling. Then one minute later, Ziegenfuss extended the lead again with Brouse coming up with the assist to cap the Chanticleer scoring 4-0.
A late goal from Ilana Izquierdo in the 86th minute spoiled the shutout. The goal was Izquierdo's second of the season, and it also makes her the first Golden Eagle to record multiple goals on the year. Ryan Smith came in with the assist, which was her first of the season and second of her career.
Notably Tay Collum had a season high of six shots on the night.

The Golden Eagles host Troy at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex on Oct. 9 at 1 p.m.
