Women's Soccer Gears Up for Road Match Against Coastal Carolina

HATTIESBURG, Miss.—The Southern Miss women's soccer team (1-6-2, 1-2-1 Sun Belt) head to Conway, S.C., for the first series match-up against Coastal Carolina (1-7-3, 0-3-1 Sun Belt) kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at the Coastal Carolina University Soccer Stadium.
Last Time on the Pitch
The Southern Miss women's soccer team (1-6-2, 1-2-1 Sun Belt) fell 1-0 against first series opponent Texas State (9-1-2, 3-0-1 Sun Belt) at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex on Oct.1
The Golden Eagles found their first scoring opportunity at 31:50 when midfielder Bernadett Stefan unleashed a shot at the bottom center of the net but was unable to volley it past the Bobcat keeper.
In the 71st minute of action, Texas State were able to get ahead 1-0 when Golden Eagle defender Madisyn Flammia met the ball with her head, which dropped in the net off the bar.
At the 88th minute of action , a series of crosses around the box from the Bobcats ended in a shot for the Golden Eagles but couldn't get the ball behind the sticks, the final score remained 1-0.
Golden Eagles Against the Palmetto States
The last time Southern Miss faced a South Carolina university was Sept. 15, 2013. The Golden Eagles played Furman University in a 1-1 double-overtime draw in the final match for both teams in the Mississippi State tournament in Starkville, Miss.
There was no goal action until the 51st minute Furman midfielder India Robinson sent a pass out to forward Stephanie DeVita. She ran behind Southern Miss' defense and shot low past USM goalkeeper Brittany Taylor—putting the Paladins up 1-0.
Southern Miss found the equalizer at 64:08 when midfielder Ashley Johnson fired a shot into the far post into the roof of the net with an assist from forward Brooke Hendrix.
After two overtimes, the two teams could not be separated, and the score line remained 1-1.
The Opponent
The Coastal Carolina women's soccer program is led by 12th-season head coach Paul Hogan. He is the winningest coach in Coastal Carolina women's soccer history. Hogan served as a head coach at the NCAA Division I and III levels, an assistant at the Power 5 and the NCAA Division II levels, and a member of the USYSA Region III Olympic Development staff.
The Chanticleers currently hold a 1-7-3 record overall, and a 0-3-1 in Sun Belt play after their 2-2 draw with Louisiana in Lafayette, La., on Oct. 2.
