Golden Eagles Draw 2-2 with the Red Wolves; Fourth Tie of the Season

JONESBORO, Ark.--The Southern Miss women's soccer team (1-9-4, 1-5-3 Sun Belt) tied 2-2 with Arkansas State (8-5-3, 6-2-1 Sun Belt) for the first time in program history since 2013 for the Sunday afternoon match at the Arkansas State Soccer Complex.
"When we play our way, we get results. As we continue to play for each other, create better scoring opportunities, and minimize the mistakes we create on our own, there's no opponent we can't handle," said assistant coach Haley Knowles.
For the program, this is the Golden Eagles' most ties since 2013, with the overall record in conference play being 7-9-4.
Southern Miss took the lead early, striking first in the 21st minute; forward Esmeralda Figueroa ran a foot race with A-State forward Darby Stotts getting ahead and firing at the bottom left of the goal from the inside of the box with the help of midfielder Taylor Stewart for her first assist of the season.
The Red Wolves were unable to find the equalizer in the first period exiting the half with two goals ruled as offsides. Still, they managed to get on the board in the 53rd minute of play when forward Emma Riley whipped the ball into the right side of the net to make the score 1-1 with the assist from midfielder Aliyah Williamson.
In the 61st minute defender, Nolubablo Sishuba found the back of the net for her first goal of the season and third of her career to reclaim the Golden Eagles lead 2-1. The lead would hold until the 80th minute when A-State Williamson volleyed the ball into the net with the assist credited to Stotts. The score line remained 2-2 for the afternoon.
The Black & Gold were firing on all cylinders with 12 shots and eight of them being on goal forcing the Red Wolves keeper to come up with six saves between the sticks for the contest.
Notably, Sishuba also recorded a season high in shots having the A-State goalie face three on frame.

The Golden Eagles host Louisiana for their last home match of the season, kick-off is slated for 2 p.m. at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
