Women's Soccer Heads to Jonesboro for Last Road Match of the Regular Season

HATTIESBURG, Miss.—The Southern Miss women's soccer team (1-9-3, 1-5-2 Sun Belt) hit the road for their final road match of the regular season against Arkansas State (8-5-2, 6-2-0 Sun Belt) Oct. 23 at the Arkansas State Soccer Complex.
"Our young roster has developed a lot throughout the season, and we are aware of the fight this game will be. It means a lot, and we will make sure to play our soccer brand while showing individual significance and grit from the 1st minute to the 90th. I am because WE are," said assistant coach J.P. Valadares.
Last Time Out
In their Thursday afternoon match at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex, the Golden Eagles fell 1-0 in their first meeting against Appalachian State.
App State struck first in the 14th minute of action for the contest's only tally. Mountaineer forward Izzi Wood fired a shot over the goal line into the low far corner, with the assist credited to forward Breckyn Monteith.
The first scoring opportunity for the Golden Eagles came from Ryan Smith whipping the ball at the top right of the net, but App State goalie Kerry Eagleston was there with the save.
The Black & Gold pushed to find the equalizer in the last minute of the second stanza when Smith and defender Mallory Tapper shot attempts took feeds deep inside the six trying to flick it low, but they were unable to break even.
Despite the loss, the Golden Eagles outshot the Mountaineers 13-5 for the afternoon, with eight of them being on goal.

In the last five seasons, he has led the team to eight or more victories, including an 11-5-1 record in the 2020 season, which is a program record. Before Arkansas State, he spent 14 seasons at Fla. Atlantic and four seasons at Barry as head coach.
Arkansas State currently holds an 8-5-2 overall and 6-2 record in conference play due to their win 1-0 over Old Dominion on Oct. 20.
