HATTIESBURG, Miss—The Southern Miss women's soccer team (1-9-3, 1-5-2 Sun Belt) fell to Appalachian State (5-7-4, 4-4-0 Sun Belt) 1-0 in Thursday's afternoon match at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex for the first meeting.
App State struck for the game's only tally in the 14th minute of play. Forward Izzi Wood slipped a shot over the goal line into the low far corner after receiving the assist from forward Breckyn Monteith at the top of the box, putting the Mountaineers up 1-0.
Both teams earned corner kicks in the first ten minutes of play, followed by the first shot attempt coming from midfielder Ryan Smith whipping the ball at the top right of the net, but Kerry Eagleston was there to make the save. Both teams exited the half with the Golden Eagles behind the Mountaineers.
The Golden Eagles attempted to get out front in the second stanza with back-to-back scoring opportunities from forward Alice Williamson but could not cash them in.
Midfielder Ilana Izquierdo fired the ball out top with her corner kick at 74:16, followed by defender Natalie Wilson's free-kick into the box, resulting in a shot that bounced off the crossbar in the 80th minute.
The Black & Gold battled to the very end when Smith and defender Mallory Tapper shot attempts took feeds deep inside the six trying to flick it low with one minute remaining in the period, but they were all picked up by App State goalie Eagleston.
The Golden Eagles outshot the Mountaineers for the contest 13-5, with eight being on goal; they had some good looks but couldn't solve Eagleston. App State leaves the contest with the series lead.
