Women's Soccer Hosts App State Thursday Afternoon

HATTIESBURG, Miss—The Southern Miss Women's soccer team (1-8-3, 1-4-2 Sun Belt) faces Appalachian State (4-7-4, 3-4 Sun Belt) for the first time at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex Thursday, Oct. 20, at 2 p.m.
Last Time Out
The Golden Eagles dropped their match 8-1 against South Alabama on Oct. 16 at the Cage in Mobile, Ala.
The Jags got out on the right foot when they started their scored three goals in the first 20 minutes of the match; to have the Jags up 3-0. The Golden Eagles had their first scoring opportunity in the 22nd minute from midfielder Ilana Izquierdo, but she fired it out top. They exited the half behind the Jaguars.
South Alabama kept its momentum, volleying the ball into the net five minutes into the second stanza off a free-kick shot toward the top right of the box, making it past Alex Helbling. The Golden Eagles tried to reverse the field several times, but the Jags kept recovering the ball, found the net a few more times, and capped their scoring in the 84th minute of play, tucking it around Kesaia Bruni.
The Jaguar squad had midfielder Imane Addi bag, a brace, and forward Jasmine Greene notch a hat trick. South Alabama continued its series lead 13-4-0 with their defeat over the Golden Eagles.
Golden Eagles Against Tar Heel State Teams
The last time the Black & Gold faced off with a North Carolina university was on Sept. 16, 2021, at the Transamerica Field in Charlotte, N.C., against the Charlotte 49ers, where the Golden Eagles shut out the contest 2-0.
Midfielder Samantha Stiglmair put the Golden Eagles up 1-0 with her goal in the 24th minute of play when she hit the ball on the half-volley beating the 49ers keeper at the near post.
In the 61st minute, Ariel Diaz received the ball from Blessing Kingsley just outside the six-yard box and was able to get around the Charlotte back line and whip it past the keeper to advance the Golden Eagles lead 2-0.
The squad kept the 49ers off the board despite facing their 17 shots for the night.
The Opponent
Aimee Haywood, who is in her first season as head coach, oversees the Appalachian State women's soccer team. In the history of App State women's soccer, she is the fifth head coach. Haywood came from Queens University of Charlotte, where she served as head coach for two seasons and guided the team to the NCAA Division II Championships' second round. The Queens under Haywood finished the regular season with a record of 16-5-1 and were given the No. 3 seed in the Southeast Region of the 28-team national championship.
The Mountaineers finished 7-11-1 in the 2021 season and 2-8 in conference play. They grabbed a win over Texas State but a loss over Georgia State in the Sun Belt Championships.
The program currently holds a 4-7-4 overall and 3-4 Sun Belt record due to their win over Old Dominion 1-0 on Oct.14.
