Golden Eagles Sweep EKU, Lamar on Day One of Southern Miss Classic

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Golden Eagles improved to 6-0 at the Wellness Center following two victories to open the Southern Miss Classic. Southern Miss downed Eastern Kentucky and Lamar in straight sets.
The Golden Eagles dominated throughout the day, putting up 86 kills compared to their opponents' combined 65. The Black and Gold improve to 7-5 on the season heading into the final day of the tournament.
Match One, Southern Miss 3, EKU 0
The Golden Eagles opened their tournament with a victory over the Eastern Kentucky Colonels in straight sets. Six Southern Miss players recorded multiple kills, as Mia Wesley led her team with 11.Â
Southern Miss was able to hold EKU to a hitting percentage of .085, which was instrumental in the sweep. Kenzie Smith provided assists on 28 of the Golden Eagles' 36 kills and seven athletes recorded 14 blocks combined.
Set One, Southern Miss 25, EKU 19: The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early lead behind the offensive efforts of Cara Atkinson. The freshman posted four of Southern Miss' 11 kills in the opening frame which was won by the Black and Gold, 25-19.
Southern Miss dominated the first set at the net, posting nine total blocks as a team. The Golden Eagles held EKU to a hitting percentage of -.033, which was crucial to their success.Â
Set Two, Southern Miss 25, EKU 22: The Golden Eagles and Colonels battled in a close second set, which Southern Miss won, 25-22. The frame was knotted up six separate times in the frame, but the Golden Eagles found a way to commit fewer errors to take a 2-0 lead.
Wesley took over in the second set, posting seven kills of her team's 15 kills, while Lindsey Legg posted back to back service aces at a crucial moment in the frame. Smith dished out 13 assists throughout the set.
Set Three, Southern Miss 25, EKU 20: Southern Miss finished off the sweep in the third set, winning the frame by a score of 25-20. The Golden Eagles were again able to keep their mistakes to a minimum, pushing past the Colonels in straight sets.Â
Kinsley Hanback tacked on three kills with a hitting percentage of .400 in the set, while Duquesne Moratzka, Smith and Legg all tallied four digs each.Â

The Golden Eagles picked up where they left off against EKU, dominating Lamar in straight sets to improve to 7-5. Southern Miss outperformed the Cardinals all over the court, posting 50 kills, 48 assists and 48 digs as a unit.
Hanback led her team with her efficient hitting in the second contest of the day, with 10 kills on 15 attempts. Moratzka led her team with 13 kills, followed closely by Wesley and Hanback, both in the double-digits.
Set One, Southern Miss 25, Lamar 16: Southern Miss exploded offensively in the first set, winning by a dominating mark of 25-16. Wesley, Hanback and Moratzka recorded 16 of the Golden Eagles 21 first frame kills enroute to a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Golden Eagles were also effective on the defensive end of the ball, recording 20 digs as a unit in the opening set.Â
Set Two, Southern Miss 25, Lamar 17: The Golden Eagles continued to dominate in the second set, taking a 2-0 lead after a 25-17 frame. Moratzka and Lauren Talbert tallied four kills apiece to lead Southern Miss offensively.

Lamar was held to a .179 hitting percentage, while the back court recorded 11 digs in set two.
