HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- As a final tune up tournament before Conference USA action, the Golden Eagles host their second Southern Miss Classic of the 2021 season this weekend. Southern Miss looks to bounce back after three tough matches last week and build momentum as the conference season approaches.
Southern Miss took part in the Jacksonville State Invitational last weekend in Alabama. The Golden Eagles dropped matches against Nicholls, South Alabama and Jacksonville State. Heading into the Southern Miss Classic, the program holds a record of 5-5.
The Black and Gold first takes on the Eastern Kentucky Colonels on Sept. 17 at 12:30 p.m. Led by third year head coach Johnna Bazzani, the Colonels last traveled to Indianapolis on Wednesday, Sept. 15 for a match against Butler which resulted in a 0-3 defeat. EKU has opened the 2021 season with a 2-8 record. This match serves as the first matchup between these programs.
The Golden Eagles will then take on Lamar at 7 p.m. later that day. The Cardinals last hosted the Lamar Invitational at home and finished the weekend 1-2. Lamar looks to improve upon its 3-7 record at the Southern Miss Classic. Southern Miss and Lamar last battled in 1997, which the Golden Eagles won in the only matchup between the programs.
The Chattanooga Mocs serve as Southern Miss' last challenge of the weekend. The Golden Eagles have not faced off with Mocs since 2013 and the programs have only faced off twice in their respective histories, with each team holding a victory in the series.
As a program, Southern Miss' 523 kills ranks sixth in the NCAA, while the Golden Eagles' 489 assists rank fifth in the nation. Junior Kenzie Smith has dished out a majority of her team's assists with 388 on the season, the sixth most for an individual in 2021.Â
Defensively, sophomore Aliah Giroux has anchored Southern Miss with 191 digs (13th in the NCAA), while Mia Wesley has been a force for the Golden Eagles' offense with 134 kills.
The Golden Eagles return home to the Volleyball Wellness Center on Sept. 17 and Sept. 18 for the second Southern Miss Classic. The Black and Gold battle EKU and Lamar on Friday before taking on Chattanooga on Saturday.
