Golden Eagles Advance in NCAA Regional after Beating SEMO 21-0 Saturday Afternoon

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss registered a season-high for runs and hits, behind three home runs from Christopher Sargent and five hits each from Gabe Montenegro and Reed Trimble, to eliminate SEMO 21-0 from the NCAA Oxford Regional Saturday afternoon at Swayze Field.
The Golden Eagles, which dropped a 5-2 series opener to Florida State Friday, snapped a three-game losing streak and will play in a 1 p.m., Sunday elimination game against the loser of the Ole Miss/Florida State game slated to take place later Saturday.
Behind Sargent's three home runs, Southern Miss belted a season-best six and collected the most round-trippers since its opening game of the 2009 NCAA Tournament against Elon as the Golden Eagles scored in six different innings.
Tying a school record and breaking its school's NCAA record, Sargent collected a two-run homer in the fourth, and solo shots to open both the sixth and seventh innings to give him a team-best 16 home runs.
Dustin Dickerson added his second homer of the year in the fifth, while Danny Lynch launched his 11th with no one on in the sixth, while Will McGillis added a two-run shot – his eighth of the year – in the seventh.
Both Montenegro and Trimble tied a school NCAA record with five hits each of the squad's 24-hit attack – tying Montenegro who collected five hits in a win over Arizona State on June 2, 2019. Montenegro scored four times and drove in a pair of runs, while Trimble – along with Sargent – knocked in five runs each.
The Golden Eagles (38-20) scored four runs in both the third and fourth innings. After scoring two runs in the fifth, USM added a pair of five-run frames in both the sixth and seventh before adding a solo run in the ninth to complete the scoring.
Danny Lynch added four hits and drove in a pair of runs as well for the designated visiting team.
Golden Eagle starter Walker Powell gave up just four hits over six-plus innings of work and fanned four to record the victory as he improved to 10-2 on the year, which also gave him his 30th career win. Walker was taken out of the game after a seventh inning and the trio of Matt Adams, Aubrey Gillentine and Tanner Hall each covered a scoreless inning down the stretch as the team notched its eight shutout of the year.
Bryce Grossius got the start for SEMO (30-22) and after allowing just one hit over the first two frames, the Golden Eagles chased him after 2 1/3 innings with four runs on four hits with a walk and no strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall to 4-3.
