OXFORD, Miss. – No. 2 seed Southern Miss propelled itself to a Monday winner-take-all contest for the NCAA Oxford Regional after defeating both No. 3 seed Florida State, 7-4, and No. 1 seed Ole Miss, 10-7, Sunday evening at Swayze Field.
The Golden Eagles, which reached 40 wins for the fifth-straight time by virtue of the two victories thus improving to 40-20, plays Ole Miss (43-20) again Monday at 12 noon for the regional championship.
In the nightcap versus Ole Miss, Reed Trimble drove in four runs and Tanner Hall covered the final five innings as the Golden Eagles overcame a four-run top of the first by the Rebels with a seven spot of their own in the bottom of the frame.
The designated visiting Ole Miss team took advantage of two walks and two hit by pitches, before getting a sacrifice fly from TJ McCants and a two-run double from Hayden Dunhurst to take the 4-0 advantage after a half inning of play.
The Golden Eagles started cutting into that lead in their half of the frame with Gabe Montenegro's 24th double of the season to start the inning. Reed Trimble then blasted an opposite field home run to the leftfield bullpen, his 15th, to cut the gap to 4-2. After a strikeout, Christopher Sargent singled and Reece Ewing walked before Danny Lynch cut the deficit to one run with an RBI single.
Will McGillis, who finished the day 5-for-8 with two homers and three RBI, then singled to load the bases. Blake Johnson followed with an RBI fielder's choice to tie the score and then Southern Miss took the lead on a two-run single by Dustin Dickerson and another run-scoring single by Trimble.
The Rebels cut into the gap with a solo home run from Peyton Chatagnier, his fourth of the year, to make the score 7-5 in the second, but the Golden Eagles got a two-run homer from McGillis, which was his 10th of the campaign in the bottom half of the frame, to push the lead to 9-5.
The Rebels scored two more times in the fourth – while the Golden Eagles added a solo run on a Trimble bases-loaded hit by pitch in the seventh - before Hall came in for Southern Miss to start the fifth.
Hall limited the Rebels to a single and a hit batsman with five strikeouts over the final five frames to earn his first collegiate save, retiring the first seven batters he faced in his outing. Chandler Best (2-1) got the victory in 1 2/3 innings of relief, allowing a run on three hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Ole Miss starter Drew McDaniel (5-2) lasted just two-thirds of an inning and gave up seven runs on six hits and a walk with a strikeout to suffer the loss.
In the opening game, Southern Miss got a pair of huge home runs to erase an early deficit.
FSU plated a solo run in the opening frame on a Robby Martin RBI single, and then added three more runs off of USM starter Drew Boyd in the third, but the Golden Eagles went to Ryan Och who fanned a career-high 11 batters over 4 2/3 innings in relief and allowed only one hit and two walks to get the win and improve to 8-0 on the year. Hurston Waldrep got all five men he faced down the stretch with two strikeouts to earn his third save.
The Golden Eagles initially tied the game at 1-1 with Trimble driving in McGillis via fielder's choice in the third, who opened the stanza with a double.
Blake Johnson cut the deficit to 4-3 with a two-run home run to left-center in the fifth for his second round-tripper and McGillis tied the score with a homer in the seventh just inside the leftfield fair pole.
The Golden Eagles took the lead for good with two runs in the eighth.
After a leadoff single by Trimble to start the eighth, Charlie Fischer walked. After a fielder's choice, Reece Ewing and Danny Lynch each knocked in a run with a single. Sargent plated the team's final tally with a single in the ninth.
FSU reliever Hunter Perdue (1-3) suffered the loss as he gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits with a walk and a strikeout.
The Seminoles ended their season at 31-24.
