HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss beach volleyball team has begun its journey to Huntsville, Ala., where it will compete in the double-elimination CCSA Championships. The Golden Eagles open Friday at 9 a.m. against UAB, with the winner taking on No. 19 Georgia State (also the top seed) at 12 p.m.
Free streaming is available through the CCSA site as well.
Both teams are part of the Blue bracket, which features (in seeding order) Georgia State, Florida Atlantic, FIU, UAB, Southern Miss and ULM. The Aqua side has Florida State, LSU, TCU, South Carolina, Tulane, College of Charleston, Missouri State and UNC Wilmington.
The Blazers have a pair of 4-1 wins in the teams' only head-to-heads this season, and Friday's victor will battle top-seeded Georgia State on Saturday.
Southern Miss' only other trip to this stage (2020 canceled due to COVID), was in its inaugural 2019 season. The Golden Eagles fell in a pair of pool-play contests to Florida State and Charleston before being eliminated by South Carolina.
This year's squad has by far faced its hardest schedule to date, with 15 of its 24 losses coming to ranked opponents. Kylie Grandy and Abbey Wilson are the headliners with a 19-14 record that includes ranked wins against South Carolina (twice), Georgia State (twice) and FIU.
The Golden Eagles most recently fell to Tulane twice, Florida State and TCU in Gulf Shores. Madison Lawler and Olivia Hepworth earned a nice win against the No. 4 Seminoles, their fourth together.
