Southern Miss Defeats UAB and ULM, Falls to Georgia State in First Day of CCSAs

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- The Southern Miss beach volleyball team dealt with weathered schedule changes on the first day of the CCSA Championships. The Golden Eagles defeated UAB (3-2), fell to No. 19 Georgia State (0-5) and topped ULM (4-1) on Friday, with the last match moved up due to impending weather Saturday morning.
"I'm incredibly proud of these young ladies," head coach Shawn Taylor said. "We came out firing on all cylinders against UAB. It was the first time all season I felt like we were doing all the things we talk about as a collective unit. We were the aggressor and it definitely paid off."
The Blazer victory served as redemption for the Golden Eagles after dropping a pair of 4-1 defeats earlier in the year. It also marked the squad's first out of only two CCSA Tournament appearances in its short history.
"Against Georgia State, I thought we carried that same energy and mindset (as UAB)," Taylor said. "Georgia State just played consistently, and they're a solid team that doesn't give up much. I thought we competed well at all five spots. We were notified late that we would have to compete a third time of the day against ULM. I couldn't be more proud of the effort from our team. We had switched out of competition mode for the day and were working on school work. To flip the switch and compete at the level they did says a lot about them as people.
"The competition has been incredibly high, and we are looking forward to our first encounter with FAU tomorrow."
Further information about the weekend schedule will be announced at a later time.
