HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The stakes are high for both Southern Miss and UTEP when the two teams meet Friday (1 p.m.) and Saturday (12 p.m.) in El Paso.
Both teams are the only ones in the West division playing in this makeup weekend after the Miners had COVID-19 issues in the original Feb. 7-8 span. Southern Miss (9-8, 4-6 C-USA) needs to win both to get UTEP's tiebreaker (7-6, 6-4 C-USA) and clinch the last spot in next week's C-USA Championships.
Southern Miss fell 3-0 and 3-1 to North Texas in last weekend's home finale, with each of the final three Monday sets separated by two points apiece. This coming weekend marks the team's fifth and sixth road contests of the season, compared to its 13 at home. Of those, it swept a series at LA Tech and split at UTSA two weeks ago, featuring an improbable rally from set-point in the third and fifth sets.
The Miners are 2-2 at home in league play, sweeping UTSA and falling to Rice. The Golden Eagles are 14-6 all-time in the series, with last year's defeat snapping a seven-match win streak. UTEP brings in a strong offense, tops in league play for service aces (1.92 per set) and fifth for kills (12.82).
Madison Lawler (1,373) sits seven digs away from the No. 7 spot all-time at Southern Miss, held by Sharon Montgomery (1985-89). She and Piper Matsumoto are the team's lone seniors, looking to extend their careers. Kinsley Hanback and Duquesne Moratzka remain two of the top offensive threats. Hanback has improved her hitting percentage each year to a team-high .270, featuring 158 kills. She has been in double-figures for five-straight matches. Moratzka's 3.52 kills per set ranks seventh in the league and is the most by a Golden Eagle since 2018.
