Southern Miss Drops Weekend Opener to UTEP

EL PASO, Texas -- UTEP's strong offense continued into Friday afternoon, and it was too much for Southern Miss to overcome in a 3-0 defeat (18-25, 19-25, 16-25).
The Miners hit .376 on 48 kills while also adding four aces. Southern Miss was led by Duquesne Moratzka with eight kills, while Nyanuer Bidit, Kinsley Hanback and Lauren Talbert added five apiece.
The Golden Eagles led 6-3 in the first set, but after a 15-15 tie allowed five-straight points that set the game apart. The second was still just a 17-15 and 19-17 deficit, despite it being four points earlier, but a kill and two errors brought it to set-point.
The Miners built a 16-9 lead in the third and final set, and despite the Golden Eagles pulling within 16-12, it was the closest they would get.
Lauren Seibert also made her Southern Miss debut in the third set, while Chloe Klusman earned a start there too.
The weekend, and regular season, will conclude Saturday at 12 p.m. CT.
