HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's tennis team is set for its two biggest matches of the season, hosting UAB on Friday (2 p.m.) followed by Louisiana Tech on Sunday (11 a.m.).
The Golden Eagles (5-2, 1-1 C-USA) have won 20 home matches in a row dating back to April 2018. While COVID-19 forced the cancelation of both home tilts with these foes last spring, Southern Miss is seeking revenge from a 4-3 defeat to UAB in 2019. This will be the first matchup with LA Tech since 2013.
Southern Miss raced out to a 4-1 win at Jacksonville State on Saturday to close a three-match road swing. Ebru Zeynep Yazgan remains the team leader in singles (6-1), while Stephanie Booth follows at 5-2. The win over the Gamecocks also saw the squad move to 10-10 in doubles, including freshman Suhana Das finding her rhythm with Katia de la Garza to have a 4-1 mark.
The Lady Techsters are 6-6 with a win over WKU and defeat to Middle Tennessee, flipped results from when Southern Miss faced each team in Murfreesboro.
UAB is 8-5, which includes taking two points from No. 6 Georgia Tech early in the season. Mutual opponents with the Golden Eagles include Mississippi State (both 7-0 defeats) and South Alabama, which defeated UAB but fell to Southern Miss.
