HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's tennis team fought tooth-and-nail all afternoon on a cool, overcast day at home, toppling a stout UAB team by a 4-2 margin on Friday.
The Golden Eagles (6-2, 2-1 C-USA) clinched on Katia de la Garza's gritty 7-5, 7-6 effort on No. 1, improving to 4-3 on the year. Southern Miss also took the doubles point for the second-straight match, powered by wins on Nos. 1 and 2.
"It was another great team win versus a very good team that's been on a roll," head coach Steve Schram said. "UAB has won six in a row, and we knew it would be a tight match. It came down to one court at the end with Katia and Stephanie. Katia was able to clinch this time, and it was a huge win for her. I'm very proud of the overall effort today."
Other singles wins came in sweeps by usual suspects Sarah Medik, Ebru Zeynep Yazgan and Stephanie Booth. Yazgan is now 7-1.
Southern Miss now looks ahead to LA Tech on Sunday at 11 a.m.
