HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's tennis team will continue its travels for the second weekend in a row, this time battling Jacksonville State on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Southern Miss saw its first C-USA action last weekend, falling first to Western Kentucky, 5-2 on Saturday, before winning 4-3 over host Middle Tennessee on Sunday. Stephanie Booth was exceptional in picking up two three-set victories, including the clinching point to close it out. Booth improved to 4-2 on the year, while Ebru Zeynep Yazgan earned a pair of sweeps for a team-best 5-1.
The Golden Eagles were victorious in the last meeting, March 6, 2020, overcoming a doubles sweep. Three of the team's four singles wins came from returners. It was the first head-to-head since a 7-0 win on Jan. 24, 2016.
The Gamecocks are 5-5 and coming off a 5-2 Monday loss at Troy. They have found their greatest strength in doubles, boasting a 20-8 mark (.714). Southern Miss will look to improve its fortunes there, but its last two wins have come despite not claiming the point. The first of those, against South Alabama on Feb. 26, was the team's first against the Jaguars and included Sarah Medik defeating a former Sun Belt Player of the Year on No. 1.
