HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- A new challenge awaits Friday afternoon for the Southern Miss women's tennis team as it hosts South Alabama at 2 p.m. An originally-scheduled Saturday contest with Loyola New Orleans was postponed due for COVID-19 reasons.
The Golden Eagles have won 19-straight home matches, with its last defeat coming against the Jaguars way back on April 4, 2018. The two teams have one mutual opponent, West Alabama, both winning 6-1. USA is 6-1 this year and won the 2019 Sun Belt Championship.
While last season's meeting did not happen due to the COVID-19 cancellation, Katia de la Garza picked up a No. 4 singles win over Nikola Kohoutova after the Golden Eagles earned the doubles point behind Arina Amaning/Tjasa Jerse and Rikeetha Pereira/Ebru Zeynep Yazgan.
Southern Miss is 10-8 in singles and 6-3 in doubles this year with wins over Florida A&M and West Alabama following an opening defeat to Mississippi State. Sunday's victory over the Tigers marked the team's first action in 14 days.
