Baseball Ends Opening Set with 10-0 Series Clinching Win

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Reed Trimble belted a pair of three-run home runs and two Golden Eagle pitchers scattered three hits as Southern Miss defeated Northwestern State 10-0 Monday afternoon in seven innings at Pete Taylor Park.
The Golden Eagles (2-1) won their opening series as their pitching staff collected 45 strikeouts while allowing just four walks over the three-game set.
Starter Drew Boyd limited the Demons (1-2) to two hits and posted a career-high nine strikeouts with no walks to earn his first victory for the Golden Eagles. Matt Adams tossed the final two frames and posted three strikeouts and only walk.
The Golden Eagles scored multiple runs in each of the first three innings to jump out to the lead.
Christopher Sargent drove in the game's first run in the opening inning with a single and later scored via a Demon error.
After a pair of walks to start the second, Trimble belted a Levi David pitch over the right-centerfield wall to make the score 5-0.
Southern Miss then added four more runs one inning later. After Blake Johnson knocked in the first run with a sacrifice fly, Trimble belted his second homer over the right-center wall.
Trimble finished with his first Southern Miss two-homer game – the first by a Golden Eagle since Matt Guidry belted two versus Valparaiso last season on Feb. 29 – and added a career-high tying six RBI.
He also knocked in that many runs in the final game of the 2020 season versus Troy in Montgomery, Ala.
The Golden Eagles finished off the contest with four straight walks to start the seventh to give them their 10th run and the game was called due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Southern Miss returns to action Tuesday when they take to the road for the first time this season in a game at South Alabama. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
