Baseball Drops Road Contest 5-3 at South Alabama Tuesday Night

MOBILE, Ala. – An eighth-inning rally proved not enough to overcome an early four-run deficit as Southern Miss fell to South Alabama 5-3 at Eddie Stanky Field Tuesday night.
The Golden Eagles fell to 2-2, while the Jaguars improved to 2-2 on the year.
Down 4-0 with one out in the eighth, Southern Miss pinch hitter Billy Garrity walked and Dustin Dickerson reached on a fielding error by the Jaguar third baseman before Gabe Montenegro drew a base on balls to load the bases.
Reed Trimble followed with a liner to right, but a nice catch by Hunter Donaldson robbed the Golden Eagle freshman of a hit and all he could manage was a sacrifice fly to score the visitors' first run. Chris Sargent followed with a run-scoring single, before pinch hitter Michael Wein doubled down the leftfield line to drive in another run to cut the margin to 4-3. That was all the runs Southern Miss managed as Slade Wilks fanned to end the frame.
It was solid starting pitching that kept the Golden Eagles off the board over the first seven innings.
Jeremy Lee (1-0) limited Southern Miss to just three hits over his starting stint, fanning eight and walking none to get the victory. His only inning of trouble came in the fourth. Trimble connected with a one-out double off the centerfield before Sargent followed with a single to put runners at the corners.
Designated hitter Reece Ewing, though, hit a grounder to third that USA turned into an inning-ending double play to end the threat.
With a 1-0 advantage in the fifth for the Jaguars, Donaldson led off the frame with a liner off of Stuart's body that ricocheted into rightfield, resulting in a double. After a strikeout, Ethan Wilson was intentionally walked before Caleb Balgaard lined a Stuart pitch over leftfield wall for a three-run homer.
The Jaguars initially got on the board first in the fourth. With two outs and runners at second and third, Michael Sandle came home when reliever Tyler Stuart's offering got Santi Montiel to chase the third strike but the pitch kicked away from the catcher allowing a runner to score.
Sandle reached on a fielder's choice and Reid Powers followed with a walk off of Golden Eagle starter Tanner Hall. Stuart then came on for Hall and allowed the runners to move up a base with his first wild pitch of the inning which helped result in the run to be scored later in the frame.
Hall suffered the loss in his collegiate debut despite a nice showing, allowing a run on one hit with three walks and four strikeouts over 3 1/3 innings.
USA added another run in the eighth on a Golden Eagle error.
Each team finished the contest with five hits.
The Golden Eagles return to action this weekend when they entertain UConn in a three-game series. Game times are set for 4 p.m., Friday, 1 p.m., Saturday and 11 a.m., Sunday.
