HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Two weeks since its last outing, the Southern Miss women's tennis team raced to a quick and clean, 6-1 victory over West Alabama on Sunday afternoon.
Stephanie Booth and Monique Burton remained 2-0 in No. 1 doubles as the Golden Eagles claimed all three of those courts for the point. The squad swept each of its singles battles for its first shutout of the young season as well after having six in the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign.
"We came out here, fought and got the win," senior Katia de la Garza said. "I felt we were all a little bit nervous but did a good job at supporting each other. We all just took care of business on our courts and did what we needed to do."
The Tigers this year defeated Jacksonville State in an exhibition match and entered as one of the top teams in Division II.
The Golden Eagles will now prepare for a major home test Friday when it hosts rival South Alabama at 2 p.m., followed by Loyola New Orleans Saturday at 11 a.m.
