HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss volleyball team is looking to get back in the win column Sunday and Monday when it travels across the Mississippi River to battle Louisiana Tech. Both matches are set for 1 p.m. on CUSA.tv.
Each team has only two league contests under their belts, both falling twice to Rice. The Lady Techsters have had two-straight matches against Southeastern Louisiana and Grambling called off and are seeking their first victories.
This upcoming trip snaps a program-record, nine-game home streak for the Golden Eagles, whose UTEP series (Feb. 7-8) was postponed due to COVID-19 concerns.
Southern Miss (5-4, 0-2 C-USA) swept LA Tech in an Oct. 24 doubleheader (3-1 in each), its only fall action. Over those two tilts, the Golden Eagles limited the visitors to a .115 hitting percentage. Duquesne Moratzka and Lauren Talbert led the way in their Black and Gold debuts with 31 and 22 kills, respectively, while Talbert added six aces.
Moratzka continues as the team's primary offensive threat, batting home 113 kills and a .198 clip, while Kinsley Hanback has produced 80 for a .278 mark. The Golden Eagles have utilized three setters, with Kenzie Smith starting five of the nine. Freshman Maddie Stayer stepped in to duty for each of the Rice contests as well.
Smith is sixth in C-USA with 8.68 assists/set, while Moratzka ranks eighth for kills (3.53) and points accounted for (4.03). Defensively, Madison Lawler is fourth with 4.59 digs/set.
