RUSTON, La. -- Southern Miss saved its best offensive display for the third and fourth sets to close out LA Tech (22-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-19) in its first road contest of the season.
"It was very nice to get our first road win on our first trip," head coach Stephanie Radecki said. "I thought the team battled and responded versus a determined and relentless team."
Duquesne Moratzka led the way with 16 kills on 46 attacks, the third time this year she has produced 16 or more (all victories). Nyanuer Bidit's 13 marked a season and career-high, while Lauren Talbert notched two aces.
Piper Matsumoto returned to the lineup, becoming Southern Miss' third starting setter in the last four contests, and she made the most of it. Her 49 assists matched a career-high set previously against FIU on Nov. 14, 2019, while her 11 digs marked her second time in double-digits there as well.
The Golden Eagles (6-4, 1-2 C-USA) unleashed some fury in the third set, hitting .359 with 18 kills. The Black and Gold jumped out to a 5-2 lead and never lost control. The fourth set saw the squad produce an efficient .282 clip as well. The only fourth-set deficit was 2-0 until Madison Lawler broke the tie with an ace. Two of the final points of the set were on Moratzka's block-assist and kill.
Southern Miss' only blemish on the afternoon was a first-set defeat in which LA Tech broke a 16-16 tie with five-straight points, the last of which forced a timeout.
This marks the fourth-straight win by Southern Miss over the Lady Techsters dating back to the 2019 season finale. The two teams will rematch at 1 p.m. Monday.
