Women's Tennis Dominates at Ragin' Cajuns Invitational

LAFAYETTE, La. -- The Golden Eagles concluded fall competition at the Ragin' Cajuns Invitational in Lafayette, La. on Friday, Nov 5 and Saturday, Nov. 6. All six athletes from Southern Miss had the opportunity to participate in singles and doubles competition in preparation for the spring season.

Southern Miss showed tremendous growth throughout the tournament, as the black and gold finished the competition with a combined record of 15-7. The Golden Eagles won a pair of doubles draws, while Alyssa Richter swept her singles bracket in her first collegiate competition.

"Everyone has been working extremely hard on and off the court this fall season," head coach Steve Schram said. "Their performances against strong competition these past two days shows the work they've put in."

Richter, a freshman from Germany, finished the weekend with a record of 6-0 in singles and doubles competition. She knocked off Laura Lopez Velez of Nicholls, Cora Barber of Tulane and Anna Katherine Harvey of Louisiana to claim her singles draw.

The pair of Ebru Zeynep Yazgan and Richter picked up three victories over teams from Tulane and Nicholls, finishing their weekend with a 3-0 record as a team. Suhana Das and Clara Tarvidel brought home the second of Southern Miss' doubles draws with wins over pairs from Louisiana and Tulane.

All six Golden Eagles finished the weekend with a record of at least .500. Das, Yazgan and Richter picked up at least two singles wins, while Southern Miss recorded a stellar record of 5-1 in doubles play.

"This is a special group of young ladies who are very talented, dedicated, and extremely hard working," Schram said. "We are very excited for the spring season, which kicks off in January."

Next Up:
The Golden Eagles take the court for the spring season, which includes Conference USA action, starting in January of 2022.
