HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's tennis team defeated the Southeastern Louisiana Lions to kick off the 2022 season. The Golden Eagles found tremendous success throughout singles and doubles competition, claiming victory at home on Saturday, Jan. 29.
The Golden Eagles (1-0, 0-0 C-USA), won two of three doubles matches to open the afternoon. Ebru Zeynep Yazgan and Alyssa Richter defeated the pair of Polina Sleptsova and Jordan Burdett by a score of 6-2 to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 advantage in doubles competition.
While Sarah Medik and Monique Burton were unable to overcome Putri Insani and Flory Bierma, Suhana Das and Clara Tardivel brought home the doubles point for the Golden Eagles, dispatching Bogi Csordas and Polina Paunova, 6-2.
Southern Miss continued its success in the singles realm, as Richter got the Golden Eagles off to a strong start, defeating Burdett with scores of 6-1 and 6-0 to claim her first-collegiate singles win. Tardivel also captured the first victory of her college career, as she overcame Csordas with a pair of 6-1 finishes.
Medik clinched the 4-0 victory over Southeastern Louisiana with her strong showing against Sleptsova. The junior soundly defeated her foe with scores of 6-1 and 6-0 to give the Golden Eagles their first win of the season.
"We were really well prepared for the match," Medik said. "Everyone was motivated to play and gave 100 percent. It was a great way to start the season, and I think this is just the beginning of something big."
Singles matches for Das, Yazgan and Burton went unfinished, as Southern Miss claimed victory with Medik's singles win.
Standout performances for Southern Miss helped the program secure its 24th consecutive home victory, a streak that dates back to 2018. Richter, in the first action of her career, picked up wins in both singles and doubles competition, while Medik ensured that Southern Miss would finish the afternoon with a sweep of SLU.
"It was a great start to the season," head coach Steve Schram said. "Overall, each of the girls showed a lot of fight. We still need to improve in some areas. We're always a work in progress in terms of doubles and we have a few areas to clean up in singles, but I'm looking forward to seeing the improvements."
The Golden Eagles have won their season-opening contest every year since 2018. Schram picked up the 32nd win of his tenure at Southern Miss, and has yet to drop a home match since arriving in Hattiesburg.
