HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Southern Miss cross country team finished 11th out of 32 teams at the NCAA South Regional on Friday morning at John Hunt Park to match the best finish for Southern Miss at the Regional meet. Six different Golden Eagles posted season-best times, while three ran to new personal bests.
"We had a sensational meet to close out the season," said head coach Jon Stuart. "With so many personal bests on the biggest stage of the year, I can't help but be proud and excited to see them continue this momentum into the indoor season."
Junior Lina May capped her outstanding season with another personal best in the 6k, as she moved to third all-time in Southern Miss history for the distance. May was the top finisher in every meet for the Golden Eagles this season and crossed the line in under 21 minutes for the first time in her career with a time of 20:49.26 to finish 31st.
Cassidy Teuscher was next across the line for Southern Miss with a season-best 21:44.61, climbing for 108th at the 1.6k split to finish 70th.
Finishing with a personal best in both races that the Black and Gold competed in this season at John Hunt Park, Katelyn Cartwright shaved 23 seconds off her previous best in the 6k to cross the line in a time of 21:56.76 to earn 84th.
Graduate Kate Mattox closed her cross country career with a season-best 22:03.16 to secure 87th, while Carlin Beal (100th, 22:18.17) completed the scoring portion of the Golden Eagle lineup by smashing her PR by nearly 30 second.
Rebecca DeKay concluded her first season as a Golden Eagle with her best time of the year, coming across the line in under 22 minutes for the first time.
"I'm very proud of how these ladies ran today," said XC coach Nick Gibson. "They went out and executed our race plan well. We were able to come away with a bunch of personal bests and tie our highest finish in school history."
The Golden Eagle now turn their attention to the indoor season, where Southern Miss will look to defend their first Conference USA Indoor Title in program history from last year.
