HATTIESBURG, Miss. --Â Despite Isaih Moore's 19-point, seven-rebound performance on Friday night at Reed Green Coliseum, the Southern Miss men's basketball team fell to 1-1 after Louisiana pulled away late in a 66-45 win. A crowd of 3,574 filled the Coliseum to watch the future Sun Belt Conference rivals square off.Â
"That was a hard-fought game and I'm disappointed for our guys that it got away like that," Ladner said. "I thought our defensive effort was outstanding. We held them to 32.8 percent and that's a winning defensive effort. We forced some turnovers, but we turned it over and they scored 20 points to our six off turnovers."
The first half was a low-scoring affair as the two teams combined for 23 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes. Jaron Pierre, Jr. hit a jump shot with 8:44 left in the first half to give Southern Miss its biggest lead of the half, and what would turn out to be its biggest lead of the contest. A flurry of missed shots and turnovers allowed for the Ragin' Cajuns to take the lead with less than three minutes left in the half. That run continued with four more points to give them a 29-23 lead heading into the locker room.Â
The Golden Eagles rode Moore's 13 first-half points as four others combined for the other 10 points. Junior Tae Hardy added four of those points and then two steals on the defensive side of the ball. The Golden Eagles hit only one of their nine three-point attempts in the first half and shot 41.7 percent from the floor.Â
With Louisiana stretching its lead to 11 points with 13:07 to play, Ladner switched the Golden Eagles into a full-court press that gave Louisiana trouble. DeAndre Pinckney grabbed an offensive rebound and scored a hard-fought two points to start a 9-0 run for the home team. Hardy followed with a three-point play after making the backend of an and-one and Moore capitalized on a Ragin' Cajun turnover to cut the deficit to four. Freshman Rashad Bolden splashed a jumper along the baseline to make it 38-36, but that was as close as Southern Miss would get to regaining the lead.Â
Louisiana responded quickly with eight points in just over a minute and would hold off Southern Miss the rest of the way. The Golden Eagles went 2-of-19 from deep and 18-of-52 from the floor. Moore's 19 points led all scorers and Hardy added 14 points. Defensively, Southern Miss held the Ragin' Cajuns to a 32.8 percent shooting clip and forced 19 turnovers. Hardy tallied three steals for the game and junior Tyler Stevenson added two steals to the box score.Â
The Golden Eagles have a quick turnaround as they head to TCU for a 7 p.m. tip on Monday, Nov. 15. It's the first road trip of the season for Southern Miss and its first time playing TCU since 2005.Â
