Golden Eagles Fall to UTEP in Five Sets

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Despite strong performances from Mia Wesley and Kenzie Smith, the Southern Miss volleyball team (10-12, 2-6 C-USA) fell in five sets to the UTEP Miners on Saturday afternoon.
Wesley recorded 29 kills, the most by any Golden Eagle in 2021, in the loss. Kinsley Hanback recorded 12 kills with a hitting percentage of .417, while Smith recorded 54 assists and six kills for Southern Miss.
Set One, Southern Miss 26, UTEP 28: Despite leading 23-18 late in the set, Southern Miss was unable to close it out, dropping the frame to UTEP by a score of 28-26. The Golden Eagles recorded 15 kills with a hitting percentage of .256 and tallied 14 digs during the opening set.
Wesley and Talbert led the way for the offense in set one, combining for 11 of their team's kills. Talbert was efficient, hitting at a .800 clip in the opening frame. Smith recorded 12 assists and two kills, while Lindsey Legg and Aliah Giroux picked up a pair of service aces.
Set Two, Southern Miss 25, UTEP 15: The Golden Eagles bounced back with a dominant second set against the Miners. Southern Miss recorded 17 kills with a hitting percentage of .438 to cruise to a 25-15 set victory. The Golden Eagle backcourt recorded 16 digs, limiting UTEP's offense to tie the match, 1-1.
Giroux troubled UTEP in the service game, with two crucial aces, while Wesley recorded seven kills on 14 total attempts. Talbert was once again efficient for the Golden Eagles, with five kills with a hitting percentage of .429.
Set Three, Southern Miss 16, UTEP 25: Southern Miss struggled out of the gate and was unable to recover, as the Miners took the third set, 25-16. The Golden Eagles were held to a hitting percentage of .073 as they fell behind, 2-1.
UTEP's offense overwhelmed the Golden Eagles in the third set, as the Miners recorded a hitting percentage of .424 with 16 kills. The Black and Gold recorded 14 digs as a unit in the third frame.
Set Four, Southern Miss 25, UTEP 22: The Golden Eagles won a critical fourth set to send the match to a decisive final frame. Southern Miss' offense rallied against UTEP, hitting at a .438 clip with 17 kills to extend the match.
Wesley recorded 10 kills with a hitting percentage of .529, leading her squad offensively. Smith recorded 15 assists, while the Golden Eagle defense posted 12 digs.
Set Five, Southern Miss 9, UTEP 15: UTEP was able to push past the Golden Eagles in the final set, as Southern Miss fell by a score of 15-9. The offense was unable to generate enough kills to secure the win, as Southern Miss fell to 10-12 and 2-6 in Conference USA play.
