
Golden Eagles Fall to Rice in Straight Sets

HOUSTON, Texas -- The Southern Miss volleyball team (10-13, 2-7 C-USA) fell to the (RV) Rice Owls in straight sets on Friday, Oct. 22 in Houston, Texas.
Mia Wesley led the Golden Eagles with 10 kills and seven digs, while Kinsley Hanback and Maddie Stayer posted five kills each.Â
Stayer's five kills all came in the final set, as she finished the match with a hitting percentage of .833. Kenzie Smith recorded 23 assists and seven digs in the loss.
Set One, Southern Miss 13, Rice 25: Southern Miss dropped the first set to the Owls by a score of 25-13. Despite three service aces from Lauren Seibert, Cara Atkinson and Mia Wesley, the Golden Eagles were unable to generate consistent offense in the opening frame.
Set Two, Southern Miss 11, Rice 25: The Golden Eagles improved offensively from the first set, recording 10 kills as a unit, but fell behind, 2-0 following a 25-11 set loss to Rice. Southern Miss tallied 11 digs in the frame, but were unable to overcome the Owls.
Hanback and Wesley combined for eight kills in the second frame, with Hanback recording four kills on five attempts for a hitting percentage of .800. Kenzie Smith dished out nine assists in the set.
Set Three, Southern Miss 17, Rice 25: The Golden Eagles improved vastly on the offensive side of the ball, recording 14 kills in the third set. However, Rice was able to push past the Golden Eagles, winning the match in straight sets after a 25-17 set win.
Maddie Stayer led Southern Miss offensively with five kills and a hitting percentage of .833 in the final set. Wesley added four kills to her totals, finishing the match with 10, while Lauren Talbert chipped in three kills. Smith distributed 11 assists, while the Golden Eagle backcourt tallied 16 digs.
