HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Â The Golden Eagles head to Houston, Texas to take on the (RV) Rice Owls in Conference USA competition. Southern Miss battles Rice on Friday, Oct. 22 and Saturday, Oct. 23.
Southern Miss enters this weekend's series with a record of 10-12 with a 2-6 mark in C-USA matches. The Golden Eagles last took the floor last weekend against the UTEP Miners. Southern Miss was unable to pick up a win in either match and looks to turn its fortunes around against Rice.
Mia Wesley exploded with two strong offensive performances against the Miners, recording 24 kills on Oct. 15 and 29 kills on Oct. 16, the two-highest totals of her season.Â
Southern Miss and Rice have battled one another 24 times in a series which dates back to 1991. The Owls have won 17 of the matches, including seven of the last 10 contests. The Golden Eagles have only defeated Rice in Houston once on Oct. 8, 2006, and look to improve upon their 1-9 record in Texas against the Owls.
Since Rice entered the C-USA in 2005, Southern Miss has defeated the Owls seven times, with its last victory coming on Nov. 17, 2017 in Hattiesburg. The Golden Eagles look to change the complexion of the series with a pair of wins on the road.
Kinsley Hanback and Wesley will be called upon to lead the Golden Eagle offense against Rice this weekend. Both student-athletes have served as consistent contributors for Southern Miss throughout the 2021 season.Â
Hanback, a senior from Lexington, Ala. leads Southern Miss in hitting percentage, hitting at a clip of .336 with 173 kills on the season. Wesley leads the Golden Eagles with 315 kills on the year and has tallied 3.80 kills-per-set throughout the 2021 season.Â
As a program,the Golden Eagles lead the C-USA in total kills (1,105), digs (1,305) and assists (1,014). Kenzie Smith's 826 assists are the fourth highest-total in the NCAA and the highest in the conference.
