TALAHASSEE, Fla. – The women of Southern Miss cross country put together one of their best overall performances of the season on Friday morning at Apalachee Regional Park.
"I was really pleased with the effort of our team today," head coach Nick Gibson said. "Lina continues to be solid at the top for us and the rest of our team looked strong in their first 6k race this year. We'll take the momentum gained today to Charlotte for the conference meet."
As a team, the Golden Eagle finished 12th out of 29 teams in the Women's Open 6k with an average time of 22:33.8.
Lina May was once again the top finisher for Southern Miss, as she earned another top 25 finish. The Vancleave native pushed at the right time, climbing from 30th at the midway point of the race to finish 24th in a time of 21:38.1.
Cassidy Teuscher, the C-USA Freshman of the Year a season ago, showed flashes of her strong freshman campaign with a 59th place finish, ranking her fourth among the five C-USA teams with student-athletes at the meet.
A consistent piece of the top five for the Golden Eagles this season, Katelyn Cartwright, used the 2k-4k portion of the race to move up 38 spots and continued to climb to a 75th place finish, crossing the line in 23:35.7, while Carlin Beal just missed a personal best with a time of 23:01.9 to finish 113th.
Senior Kate Mattox closed out the point scoring portion of the Golden Eagle lineup with a 120th place finish, while Rebecca DeKay and Sarah Parnell both continuously climbed the leaderboard of 278 fellow runners to finish 136th and 180th, respectively.
Southern Miss now turns their focus to the postseason with the Conference USA Championships set for Oct. 30 in Charlotte, N.C.
