SOUTH BEND, Ind. – After being named the Conference USA Runner of the Week following her performance at the North Alabama Showcase two weeks ago, Lina May once again led the way for the Southern Miss cross country team with a time of 17:36.1 to finish ninth at the Joe Piane – Notre Dame Invitational on Friday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles finished 13th out of 24 teams with an average time of 18:29.8 in the gold (5K) race.
"Lina was once again really strong for us," head coach Nick Gibson said. "Carlin was also impressive in her first race this season with a big personal best. We still have improvements to make as a team before our final regular season race at Florida State."
Cassidy Teuscher was next across the line for Southern Miss in 44th place and a time of 18:20.6, while Carlin Beal crushed her previous personal best in the 5K for cross country by 22 seconds to finish third among the Golden Eagles.
Rounding out the top five for the Black and Gold were junior Katelyn Cartwright (84th, 18:50.6) and senior Kate Mattox (96th, 18:57.5), while Sarah Parnell (130th, 19:26.2) and Rebecca DeKay (143rd, 19:50.8) also crossed the line for the Golden Eagles.
Southern Miss returns to action in two weeks at the FSU XC Invite/Pre-Nationals Meet in Tallahassee, Fla. for one last tune-up prior to the Conference USA Championships.
