Golden Eagles Drop Hard-Fought Opener at Mississippi State

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's tennis team had a few chances to surprise Mississippi State on its own courts, but the Bulldogs prevailed in a 7-0 margin on Friday afternoon.
"I was real proud of our effort today," head coach Steve Schramsaid. "Mississippi State is one of the best teams on our schedule. I'm looking forward to seeing how our team uses this experience going forward."
The tightest battle of the day was Katia de la Garza going toe-to-toe with Tamara Racine, who on the doubles side is ranked 41st. The senior, who was 9-1 last year, fell 6-7 (6-8), 6-2 and 6-10.
On the doubles side, the Golden Eagles had first-time pairings on Nos. 2 and 3.
Southern Miss will return to action Monday for its home opener against West Alabama (2 p.m.), its last match until Jan. 31 against Troy.
