HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss Women's Tennis earned its first win of the season, and 23 days since its season opener, 6-1 over visiting Florida A&M on Sunday afternoon.
The win marked third-year head coach Steve Schram's 100th for his career. He is 24-7 in his two-plus years at Southern Miss.
"I was very happy today with our performance," Schram said. "The girls came out with a lot of energy and maintained it not only through doubles but singles too. I was especially proud of how Sarah (Medik) and Ebru (Yazgan) competed and set the tone, especially for the underclassmen, and congrats to Steph (Booth) and Julia (Barden) for earning their first singles wins as well."
Medik's victory on No. 1 closed it out on a cooler, sunny day at the complex. The Golden Eagles saw three spring newcomers compete, including freshmen Suhana Das and Julia Barden in their season debuts.
Southern Miss originally had Northwestern State for a Friday home match, but after winning the doubles point and holding the lead in singles, weather and travel conflicts prevented it from completion.
The Golden Eagles (1-1) will return to action Saturday at Jacksonville State.
