HATTIESBURG, Miss. – After playing the last five games on the road, the Southern Miss baseball team returns home this weekend for its final non-conference weekend of the season with a three-game series with Little Rock at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
Game times are 6 p.m., Friday, at 2 p.m., Saturday and at 1 p.m., Sunday.
The Golden Eagles enter the weekend with a 9-3 record, tying the second-best 12-game start over the 11-year tenure of coach Scott Berry. Southern Miss won three of four games last weekend at the Lake Area Classic in Lake Charles, La., and their midweek matchup with Mississippi State was postponed due to rain.
The Trojans enter play this weekend with an 8-6 record after falling at Oral Roberts 4-3 in 11 innings during the midweek.
This series marks the first meeting between the schools in baseball since the 1997 season and the Golden Eagles lead 9-5 overall.
The Golden Eagles continue to be led offensively by sophomore Charlie Fischer with his .395 batting average with two homers, 11 RBI and a current team-best seven-game hitting streak. Senior Matt Guidry, who has reached base in 68 consecutive games, ranks second with a .359 batting mark to go along with two homers, 11 RBI and an on-base percentage of .561.
Sophomore Will McGillis enjoyed a solid weekend in Lake Charles with three doubles and five RBI to up his season's average to .344, while redshirt freshman Andrew Stanley enjoyed a six-hit weekend to see his average rise to .333.
On the mound, Southern Miss expects to throw the trio of senior right-hander Walker Powell, who earned the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week award Monday, freshman right-hander Ben Ethridge and freshman left-hander Chandler Best in that order versus the Trojans over the weekend.
Following the weekend set, the Golden Eagles return to action Tuesday when they travel to Montgomery, Ala., to face Troy at Riverwalk Stadium, the home of the Double A Montgomery Biscuits. Game time is 6 p.m.
