
Track & Field Wraps Up C-USA Indoor Championship

The men placed seventh overall while the women came in sixth in Birmingham.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Golden Eagles of Southern Miss Track & Field saw several top-five individual finishes, but the men's side finished as a team in seventh place (40 points), while the women finished in sixth (55 points).
"We were not happy with our overall result," said head coach Jon Stuart. "But I feel extremely optimistic about the direction of this young team and their potential for the future. We weren't highly ranked in the events going in, but our kids competed extremely well and stepped up to earn points for us. The distance runners were fantastic for us all weekend."
Day One
The first day saw action from Callie Jones in the pentathlon, where she would end up in third place with a final point total of 3,598. With that score, she moved into second place all-time at Southern Miss. The junior finished in first place in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.99, earning herself 912 points. Through two events, she was in fifth place after her high jump finish was eighth with a mark of 5'2.25" worth 712 points. She placed first in the shot put with a new personal-best of 39'2.25", earning 657 points, and moving into second place through three. She stayed in that spot through four, earning third place in the long jump at 17'8.25" and 668 points. Her final event, the 800m, saw her finish in seventh place at 2:33.57 and earning 649 points.
Eric Richards kept the podium visits coming after earning his second Indoor Champion title in the high jump with a mark of 6'11.50".
Prelims took place for multiple events, including the mile, 60m hurdles, 60m, 400m 800m and 200m. For the women's mile prelim, Sandra Szpott placed fourth at 5:02.15 to qualify, and McGee at 5:03.72 to qualify. Jasmine Griffin qualified for the 60m hurdles final after running an 8.75, and Christian Strong qualified on the men's side with a time of 8.29. For the 400m, Trey Johnson and DJ Butler moved on with qualifying times of 47.53 and 47.89, respectively. Elijah Miller and Elijah Burton qualified in the 60m prelims with times of 6.83 and 6.84. The 800m prelim saw Savannah McMillon qualify with a third-place finish at 2:14.89. Dylan Evans qualified for the men at 1:55.95 in eighth place.
The women's distance medley relay put the Golden Eagles on top with the first Champion finish in Southern Miss history. Sandra Szpott, Taylor Harris, Savannah McMillon and Sarah McMillon earned the first place spot with a time of 11:54.12. To round out the distance running, Lina May came in third place overall in the 5000m, with a time of 17:00.41. Teammates Theresa Harto and Emma Kate Holdbrooks came in sixth and ninth, respectively, with times of 17:14.63 and 17:27.24. Dylan Allen ran for the men, finishing in 12th at 14:58.38.
For field, men's weight throw saw Trevor Leinstock finished in 16th with a mark of 45'4.25" and Joe Wager in 18th at 44'7.50". On the women's side, Isabella Simonelli finished in 18th at 50'5.25, Kameliah Style in 20th at 49'7" and Logan Lewis in 21st at 48'10". Eric Washington came in seventh in the long jump with a mark of 22'10.50" while DJ Hurd finished in 12th at 20'6.50". The women saw Ashlee Osaji finish in fourth at 19'9.50". Angel Williams came in 12th at 18'0.50", Callie Jones in 14th at 17'8", and Grace Parker in 19th at 16'9.75".
Day Two
For the field section, it started off with the triple jump. Tyler Proctor finished in eighth place with a mark of 46'10" while PJ Edwards was just behind him in ninth at 46'5.50". Marquasha Myers finished in fifth place for the triple jump at 39'10". The men's shot put had Joe Wager finish in 17th with a distance of 44'5.25" and Trevor Leinstock come in 20th place at 41'5". Zaria Jones finished in fourth place in the high jump at a height of 5'8" while Callie Jones finished in 17th at 5'1". Logan Lewis came in eighth on the women's side with a throw of 42'1.25". Isabella Simonelli finished in 15th at 37'7.75" and Kameliah Style in 18th at 36'11.50".
In distance and mid-distance running, Sandra Szpott finished the mile in 4:51.62 to finish in fourth while Regen McGee came in ninth at 5:09.90. In the 3000m, Szpott came in fifth at 9:50.27, with Lina May in seventh at 9:54.71. Theresa Harto came in 10th at 9:57.91 and Emma Kate Holdbrooks in 15th at 10:13.34. Patton Little and Dylan Allen ran the 3000m on the men's side, and had Little finish in 8:22.80 to finish sixth with Allen finishing in 17th at 8:34.57. Savannah McMillon ran the 800m in 2:19.83, putting her in eighth place. Dylan Evans ran it for the men with a final time of 1:56.13 in sixth place.
The 60m hurdles were run by Jasmine Griffin, who finish in 8.76 in seventh place. Christian Strong also finished in seventh place for the men at 8.37. The 400m saw DJ Butler finish in sixth place at 47.73, and Trey Johnson had a seventh-place finish in 47.81. Elijah Burton and Elijah Miller ran the 60m dash, Burton finishing sixth at 6.90 and Miller in 6.91 in seventh.
Southern Miss finished eighth in the 4x400m relay for the women with a time of 3:51.98 under Maresha Chandler, Jasmine Griffin, Aireanna Taylor and Taylor Harris. The men came in fourth place at 3:14.00 with DJ Butler, Landon Chalden, Kacey Spinks, and Trey Johnson.
Overall, the Golden Eagles came away with two first place finishes and two in third place.

The Golden Eagles will send a few athletes to the NCAA Indoor Championships, taking place in Albuquerque, N.M., from Friday, Mar. 13 to Saturday the 14. Southern Miss will be hosting its annual High School Invitational Meet at the Marshall Bell Track and Field Complex on Friday, Mar. 6.
