
Golden Eagles Defeat UTSA for First C-USA Win

NATCHITOCHES, La. -- Head coach Steve Schram picked up his first Conference USA win at the helm of the Southern Miss Women's Tennis (6-1, 1-0 C-USA) program when his Golden Eagles defeated UTSA (4-4, 1-1 C-USA) 4-1 on Saturday morning in Natchitoches, La.
The Golden Eagles extended their lead to three with early wins by de la Garza and Yazgan. De la Garza pushed her team-best record to 6-1 with a 6-2, 6-1 win on court two over Laura Boroja. Yazgan added a 6-1, 6-1 win against Cabarique on court four. UTSA kept itself in the contest with a three-set win by Jasmin Starr at the top spot against Arina Amaning. However, Medik secured the Golden Eagles their first C-USA win in two years with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Cabrera on court three. Lee and Tanit Lopez went unfinished on court five and six, respectively.
Southern Miss returns home to open a seven-match homestand that begins with Jackson State on Feb. 28 at 2 p.m.

"It was a very good win against a great team in UTSA," Schram said. "We lost twice to them last season and our team was very motivated to get this win. We rebounded very well after a tough loss to Northwestern State yesterday. It's still early in the season and we will go back to the practice courts tomorrow to work on a few key components."
