HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team concludes its season-opening, seven-game homestand this weekend when they play host to Central Arkansas for a three-game series at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
Southern Miss and the Bears play at 6 p.m., Friday, 2 p.m., Saturday, and at 1 p.m., Sunday. All three games can be heard on the Southern Miss Sports Network from Learfield IMG College or via the Southern Miss Game Day app.
The Golden Eagles open the 2020 season with a 4-0 record, winning in walk-off fashion its last time out on a two-run double from freshman Reed Trimble over UNO Tuesday night.
That victory allowed the program to open the season 4-0 for the second-straight year and for the fifth time in 11 seasons under Scott Berry. The team has won its last three games by a single run, marking the first time since the start of the 1981 season in which they won three consecutive one-run games with wins over LSU (5-4 and 8-7) and West Alabama (5-4).
Southern Miss has used pitching and defense as its strength over the first four games of the season.
The pitching staff has allowed just a 2.75 earned run average, while limiting opposing hitters to a .173 batting average. In 36 innings of work, Southern Miss averages 11 strikeouts per game and only three walks, while giving up a total of 22 hits.
Defensively, the Golden Eagles have made just two errors for a .986 fielding percentage thus far.
After a 3-for-3 performance against UNO, junior Gabe Montenegro took over the team lead in hitting with a .556 batting average. Sophomore Charlie Fischer is next at .500. Senior Matthew Guidry also looks to extend his 60-game consecutive reached base string.
UCA enters the weekend with a 2-2 record, after losing two of three the opening weekend to Missouri State, before beating Memphis at home during the midweek, 5-3.
The two teams played in one previous three-game series with the Bears taking two of three games at The Pete during the 2013 campaign.
