HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss Women's Tennis team is set to end a four-match homestand on Saturday when they host Nicholls in a border battle at 12 p.m. at the Southern Miss Tennis Facility. The Golden Eagles are off to a hot start, winning their first four matches -- two by way of shutout.
Katia de la Garza and Monique Burton have erupted to an impressive start as the veterans are each 4-0. De la Garza has held down the No. 1 singles position, winning three of her four matches at the top spot. Burton has been a key piece at the bottom of the lineup, winning two matches at both No. 5 and No. 6 singles. In their last outing, five Golden Eagles won in straight sets against Delta State. Freshman Jeanne Gearity went the distance in a three-set win to pick up her first victory as a Golden Eagle.
In doubles play, Southern Miss is a perfect 10-0 with Burton and De la Garza accounting for two of those wins at No. 1 doubles. Sarah Medik and Burton also have contributed a win on court one.
Nicholls heads to Hattiesburg on a three-game skid, losing to Tulane in its last outing. The Colonels' lone win was a shutout over Grambling on Jan. 25. Caria Bouygues leads Nicholls with three wins between No. 3 and No. 5 singles. Overall, the Colonels are 8-18 in singles play and 4-8 in doubles play. Saturday's meeting is the first between the border neighbors since 2018 when Nicholls squeaked out a 4-3 win in Hattiesburg. Southern Miss holds a 3-2 advantage in the all-time series.
