
Golden Eagles Register Third Shutout in 7-0 Win Over Nicholls

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss (5-0, 0-0 C-USA) Women's Tennis team registered its third shutout of the season on Saturday when they blanked Nicholls (1-5) 7-0 at the Southern Miss Tennis Facility. In the win, Southern Miss moved its unbeaten streak to five matches.
In doubles play, Southern Miss extended its record to a perfect 12-0. Monique Burton and Medik blanked Simona Maksimovic and Laura Lopez on court one, 6-0. The Golden Eagles clinched the doubles point when De la Garza and Lee snagged a 6-2 win over Carla Bouygues and Morgan Forshag. Amaning and Yazgan went unfinished on court three.
Today's win proved to be vital as the Golden Eagles look to keep their momentum heading into next week's first match away from the Southern Miss Tennis Facility. On Feb. 21, Southern Miss will head to Northwestern State before taking on C-USA foe UTSA on Feb. 22 in Natchitoches, La.

"Today was a good win and I felt like our team was very prepared," said head coach Steve Schram. "We had a few good days of intense practices leading up to today's match and it definitely paid off. It's still early in the season and our goal is to keep improving match by match while keeping everyone on the same page."
Sophomore Katia de la Garza moved her record to an impressive 5-0 in convincing fashion against Simona Maksimovic at the top singles position. The Nuevo Leon, Mexico native dropped just one game as she won 6-1, 6-0. Tanit Lopez and Sarah Medik each moved their record to 4-0 as they won on court six and three, respectively. Medik leads all freshmen with that unbeaten mark as Warisara Lee picked up the second win of her Southern Miss career. Arina Amaning returned to action and dominated in a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles.
