HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Reed Trimble helped even the Southern Miss best of-five Fall World Series Friday with a bases-clearing, go-ahead double in the seventh to lead the Gold squad to a 6-4 come-from-behind victory at Pete Taylor Park.
The teams now are 2-2 in the series with the final game set for 12 noon, Saturday. The game is closed to the general public due to COVID-19.
Down 4-3 in the top of the seventh, Carson Paetow opened the frame with a walk. After a groundout and a strikeout, Slade Wilks walked and Chris Sargent loaded the bases with an infield single. Trimble followed by lofting a ball into left that was initially misplayed and went for a double, clearing the bases in the process to give the Gold the lead.
The Gold opened the scoring to take the lead with three runs in the top of the third.
With four hits in the inning and a hit by pitch off Black squad starter Hunter Stanley, the Gold got RBI singles from Gabe Montenegro and Chris Sargent and another run courtesy of a throwing error on a steal attempt to take the 3-0 advantage.
The Black squad, though, came back with four unanswered runs of their own to take the lead.
Gold starting pitcher Chandler Best went almost 10 innings in two starts without allowing a hit, but gave up a two-out, run-scoring single in the fifth to Dustin Dickerson to get the Black team's first tally.
Best, who did not figure in the decision, allowed just one unearned run on one hit with two walks and 12 strikeouts over 10 innings in two starts in the series.
The Black team then added three more tallies in the sixth off of Tyler Spring, giving the Black squad their only lead of the game. Will McGillis and Danny Lynch opened the frame with back-to-back singles. Following a strikeout, Billy Garrity doubled in a run and Michael Wein followed with a single up the middle to plate two more runs in giving the home squad the 4-3 advantage.
Spring, who started the sixth for Best, gave up three runs on four hits with a strikeout to earn the victory. Tyler Stuart tossed three scoreless frames down the stretch and gave up a walk with five strikeouts to earn the save.
Reliever Justin Storm suffered the loss as he gave up two runs on a hit with two walks and three strikeouts over 1 2/3 frames. He was the first reliever for Stanley who gave up three runs on five hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.
