TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Southern Miss Cross Country team opened their season at the Florida State Invitational on Friday placing fifth as a team with 120 points and an average time of 18:52.1.
"It was great to get back out there and see them compete again," head coach Aaron Kindt said. "Cassidy Teuscher had a big day for us. She's been excellent this fall in practice so we weren't surprised to see her finish top 10 in her first collegiate race. Kate Mattox I thought ran a tough race. She's finally healthy for the first time in a long time, I am excited to see how she can progress this year with consistent training and health. I thought our pack behind our leaders did a good job asserting themselves early, we just didn't have enough at the end to finish it off. Overall, I think there is a lot we can improve as a team. We have couple weeks now to build off this effort. "
In her Southern Miss debut, freshman Cassidy Teuscher led the way finishing seventh overall to pace the team. Senior Kate Mattox came in 15th overall with a time of 18:26.0. Sophomore Carlin Beal ran a personal best 19:11.6 to finish in 31st. Also making her debut for the Golden Eagles was Sarah Parnell who crossed the line in 19:16.1 coming in at 34th. Katelyn Cartwright finished in 38th with a time of 19:19.3. Freshman Hannah Martin rounded out the day for the Golden Eagles finished 41st with a time of 19:21.6 in her first race.
Southern Miss returns to action on October 16 at the Blazer Invitational in Hoover, Ala. hosted by UAB.
